Attitude Accessiblity as a Determinant of Object Construal and Evaluation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Attitude accessibility, the ease with which a given attitude comes to mind, has been demonstrated to affect attention. The current experiments focus on the construal of multiplycategorizable objects. They seek to provide evidence that (a) construals toward which individuals have more accessible attitudes, i.e., those that are more attitude-evoking, are more likely to influence the evaluation of related objects and that (b) this effect of attitude accessibility on construal processes can be extended to a whole series of objects which vary along multiple dimensions. Experiment 1 provides evidence that construals whose related attitudes were made more accessible via attitude rehearsal were more likely to influence the evaluation of a related target. Experiments 2 and 3 extend these findings to the domain of foods, which vary along two potential construal continua (healthiness versus tastiness), and demonstrate that if participant attitudes toward fitness are made more accessible, participants’ judgments about eating a variety of specific foods are guided more by the healthiness of the foods.

Doxastic Voluntarism and Epistemic Deontology
Epistemic deontology is the view that the concept of epistemic justification is deontological: a justified belief is, by definition, an epistemically permissible belief. I defend this view against the argument from doxastic involuntarism, according to which our doxastic attitudes are not under our voluntary control, and thus are not proper objects for deontological evaluation. I argue that, in ...
متن کاملFlexibility now, consistency later: psychological distance and construal shape evaluative responding.
Researchers have long been interested in understanding the conditions under which evaluations will be more or less consistent or context-dependent. The current research explores this issue by asking when stability or flexibility in evaluative responding would be most useful. Integrating construal level theory with research suggesting that variability in the mental representation of an attitude ...

متن کاملAttitude Construction: Evaluation in Context
Most theories treat attitudes as enduring evaluative tendencies; the dispositional focus enjoys intuitive appeal because it is compatible with observers’ preference for dispositional explanations (aka fundamental attribution error). From the actor’s perspective, evaluation stands in the service of action. Any adaptive system of evaluation needs to be highly sensitive to the specifics of the pre...
متن کاملE-Learning System Implementation: Implications from the Construal Level Theory
Understanding the factors that affect users’ acceptance of e-learning systems is critical for the success of adopting an e-learning system. Drawing upon the Construal Level Theory and the Technology Acceptance Model, we propose that the users’ construal level of the e-learning system would interact with users’ perceptions of the system (i.e., the perceived ease of use [PEoU] and perceived usefu...
